The Law Offices of Duane O. King is Investigating Delta Airline Technician’s Death
Co-Counsel Duane O. King, Esq. and Alabama attorney LaBarron Boone, Esq. are investigating an explosion at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that killed a Delta worker.
One of the victims, Mirko F. Marweg, 58, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was an Air Force veteran and a 20-year technician in Delta’s TechOps Tire and Maintenance facility. During routine maintenance on an airplane tire before transport, the tire unexpectedly exploded, spraying metal shrapnel throughout the bay.
Identification was confirmed by tattoos and a Mississippi State lanyard bearing his credentials. He was not scheduled to work that day but took an extra shift. The explosion also caused the death of a second employee and seriously wounded a third.
The incident highlights the dangers of working with commercial aircraft equipment and the urgent need for improved safety standards to prevent further such tragedies. According to the attorneys, the current safety measures are insufficient to protect workers from potentially severe and fatal consequences of equipment failure.
Working with commercial aircraft tires is a hazardous task that demands specialized knowledge and caution due to the significant risks involved. Aircraft tires can be inflated to pressures of 200 to 300 PSI or higher, much greater than automotive tires. Failures at such pressures can lead to explosive decompression, releasing energy and debris capable of traveling at high speeds in a dangerous blast radius and resulting in severe or fatal injuries.
Any number of situations can lead to dangerous tire explosions during maintenance, including sidewall collapse, bead failure, improper handling or mounting, embedded foreign objects, and punctures. Aircraft tire technicians receive specialized training and safety protocols to mitigate the potential dangers of working with aircraft tires. The cause of the explosion that killed Mr. Marweg remains under federal investigation.
