Drive Safe This Spring

As we approach the spring season, it is important to be mindful of the weather changes and challenges that can impact driving. In the Washington, D.C. metro area, drivers contend with road damage caused by winter weather conditions and spring rains that impact visibility. Here are some tips to avoid car wrecks and stay safe on the road this spring.

More Pedestrians

Beautiful sunny spring weather brings people outside; that means more walkers, joggers, bicycles, and motorcycles on the roads. Proceed with caution and refresh your memory on traffic laws when it comes to navigating around pedestrians. Pedestrian accidents are more common during warmer weather. Pedestrians in the crosswalk always have the right-of-way. Bicyclists generally must follow the same traffic rules as vehicles. If you want to pass bicyclists, only do so when you have space.

Animal Activity

In rural areas, animal activity increases in the spring. Some animals are coming out of hibernation, and others are on the move because it is mating season. Scan ahead for animals getting ready to cross the road so you can slow down in time. Deer and other animals that are most active at dawn and at dusk may be more difficult to see, so proceed with caution especially at these times.

Rains and Flooding

Now is the time for spring rain showers. Roads are most slippery when it just begins to rain. Give yourself additional space in the rain in case you need to stop suddenly. Always use your wipers during any precipitation and learn what do to if you hydroplane; if you should lose traction on wet pavement, avoid hard braking and sharp turns, ease off the accelerator, and hold the wheel steady until you regain traction.

Maintain Your Vehicle

The start of a new season is an ideal time to make sure your vehicle is in good working order. To ensure your car is ready to go, make sure to:

  • Check all lights to ensure optimal visibility: Dull, dingy, or broken lights make it tougher to see on rainy days.
  • Replace windshield wiper blades: Worn wiper blades are not as effective at doing their job to remove water from your windshield, impacting your ability to see the road ahead.
  • Check tire pressure and wear and tear: Winter weather can wreak havoc on tires. Check for excess wear and tear and inflate tires as needed.

Spring is a great time to get outside and enjoy the season. With a bit of caution and preparation, you can have safe travels this spring and all year around.
