Tips on How to Avoid a Car Accident When Backing Up

Most car accidents happen due to driver error, and backing up is a common accident scenario that can cause injuries and significant property damage. The best way to avoid this kind of accident is to park in such a way that backing up is not necessary, but of course, this is often not possible. Use the following tips to make sure you and those around you stay safe when you put your car in reverse:

  • Stay focused and be aware of surroundings. Do not try to back up while you are on a call, talking to passengers, or otherwise distracted. Turn off the radio so you can hear what is going on inside and outside the car.
  • Keep your car clean. Dirty windows and mirrors can create glare or block your vision. Be sure to clear snow, ice, leaves, and anything that can obscure your view while you are backing up.
  • Walk around the vehicle. Before backing up, do a physical check around the rear of the car to look for hidden obstacles, animals, or children.
  • Check your mirrors and know your blind spots. Check your rear view and side view mirrors frequently as you back out because pedestrians, shopping carts, and other vehicles can suddenly appear. Turn around to get a full view of what is happening behind your car. Watch for reverse lights on other cars.
  • Use backup cameras and other technology. Backup cameras can provide a wide view of the area behind the vehicle. Sensors are also very helpful for warning the driver when getting too close to another vehicle or object. Some cars have rear cross traffic warnings to assist with backing up. It is important to be familiar with the technology in your vehicle and use it accordingly.
  • Move slowly. Backing out slowly gives you time to react quickly and avoid an accident when the situation changes.

Liability for an Accident in Virginia

Virginia is an at-fault insurance state when it comes to car accidents. This means that an injured driver will go to the at-fault driver or their insurance company for compensation.

Additionally, when a driver acts negligently and they cause an accident, they cannot collect compensation, even if they are minimally at fault. This is because Virginia is one of the few states that follows the legal principle of contributory negligence. Not all car accident cases are clear-cut, which is why it is critical to speak with a lawyer to discuss your legal options.
