Roofing Contractors Electrocuted in Camp Springs

On Tuesday, two roofing contractors were killed after making contact with a power line in Camp Springs. Officials said they were Arocon Roofing and Construction employees replacing shingles on the First Baptist Church of Camp Springs on Allentown Road, near Joint Base Andrews.

According to the Prince George’s County Fire Department, the men were standing on a metal ladder when it touched a power line, electrocuting them with 7,000 to 7,500 volts of electricity and sparked a fire. Witnesses reported seeing the fire and ran to help, but once they reached the area, the power lines and men were on the ground, their bodies on fire. They described a traumatizing scene in which they were unable to help due to both the live wires and the fire.

First responders were forced to wait approximately 45 minutes for Pepco, the area electric company, to arrive and shut off the electricity for them to step in. Police said the medical examiner will determine whether the men were killed by electrocution or the fire.

“Our thoughts are with the individuals impacted by this event,” Pepco said in a statement Tuesday. “The safety of our customers, employees and contractors is always our top priority. We are working closely with local authorities as the investigation continues.”
