How to Avoid a Car Accident While Backing Up?

Although modern vehicle technology can prevent car accidents while reversing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that there are approximately 15,000 of these accidents yearly. These incidents typically occur at low speeds but can still cause severe or even fatal injuries, especially when the vehicle backing up is much larger and heavier.

Here are some ways you can avoid a car accident while backing up:

  • Adjust the mirrors: Rear and side mirrors have blind spots that should be minimized as much as possible. They are often moved by drivers, which happens frequently when more than one person uses the vehicle. Check them each time you get in the car and ensure they are clean. When backing up, keep checking them constantly when the car is moving.
  • Avoid distractions: Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents, and this does not only apply when a vehicle is moving forward. Do not attempt to back up the car when using a handheld device, talking to someone, or doing anything else that takes the focus away from the task.
  • Look out the back window: Driver assistance features are designed to help but are not a substitute for looking in the mirrors and turning to look out the rear window.
  • Back up straight and slowly: Only back up when necessary and go slow. You should not need to push the gas pedal. Back up in a straight direction when possible.
  • Be aware of what is around you: Getting out of the car and walking around is always safer before backing up. This will give you an idea of how much room is available. Roll down the windows before putting the car in reverse because if they are up, you might not hear anything if something gets hit.

How Do These Types of Accidents Happen?

These accidents happen when drivers do not take the precautions outlined above. A quick glance is not enough, yet this happens all the time. These incidents can also occur when a physical barrier, like a tree blocking the way or a high-traffic area with little room to maneuver. Sometimes, people park their vehicles illegally in places that generally used to be backed up into. Poor lighting and bad weather can also contribute to the likelihood of accidents.
